What is a hardware wallet?
A hardware wallet is a device to store the private keys of your public (receiving) addresses securely and offline. This is important because only the person with the private keys has access to the cryptos on the addresses in question.
The advantage of this is that you have your coins under your own control and do not have to store them with a central party such as an exchange. You are your own bank. The past knows enough examples of hacked exchanges. A hot wallet (on a phone or PC that is always on) also carries more risk than a hardware wallet (cold wallet) . A hardware wallet often operates offline and has a security chip.
What should I pay attention to?
There are many aspects to evaluate hardware wallets. Some are relevant to you, others may not. Here are some important things to consider:
- How do you want to manage your coins (computer or phone)?
- Do you only want to store Bitcoin or also other coins/tokens ?
- Do you want to be able to stake coins/tokens ?
- Do you want a larger screen with a touchscreen ?
Important: Save and secure your backup
When installing your hardware wallet, you will be presented with a seed phrase once. This is usually a list of 12 to 24 words that you need to store correctly and in the correct order. This will allow you to access your wallet again at any time.
It is super important that you store these safely, because no one can give you access to your wallets again except you.
